What is a Nutritionist and a Naturopath? Is it Right for me?

As a nutritionist and naturopath, I am focused on using food as the foundation for good health. However it doesn’t end there, mindset, lifestyle habits, sleep, supplements, and many other aspects need to be considered for optimum health and well-being. Where beneficial, I suggest using the forces of modern and natural medicine in tandem to ensure you have the best of both worlds in overcoming physical and mental health challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS MEDIFOOD® BY Fai?

MediFood® by Fai is a company owned and managed by Faieza Khan, a professional nutritionist, and naturopath. Medifood® offers programs to improve your well-being, focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, exercise and mindfulness.

WHAT FOOD SHOULD I AVOID?

Everyone is unique and so are the foods they should and should not consume. Some people may have a genuine gluten intolerance, problems with dairy, sugar, caffeine, the list goes on and on but my answer always comes back to ‘what does ‘bad’ mean to you?’ I often find that people’s fears can be more harmful to their well-being than sometimes even the food. Barring allergies or serious medical requirements, no food is off-limits. The more we fear foods, the harder it is to have a balanced way of eating and enjoying food. Bottom line: “Everything in moderation” is a cliché for a reason.

ARE CARBS BAD FOR YOU?

The short answer is no. Not all carbs are created equal and it really comes down to individual goals, sensitivities, and allergies. Refined carbohydrates can cause energy imbalances so I encourage my clients to consume complex carbohydrates where possible.

SHOULD I ONLY EAT ORGANIC FOODS TO BE HEALTHY?

Eating foods labeled as organic may reduce your exposure to synthetic pesticides and some toxic metals.

Vegetables and fruits should be consumed daily to promote optimal health. I generally advise my clients to make a balanced decision that is sustainable rather than a short-term effort. Organic food may be a preference where possible but if not I would much rather a client eats what they can, especially if the choice is between eating non-organic fruits and vegetables or not at all.

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD I BE TAKING?

In an ideal world, we would get all of the nutrients we need from whole foods. In the real world? Not so much.

Supplementation is not a must and should be personalised based on your needs and deficiencies as opposed for the sake of it. For example, vegans may want to check their levels of vitamin B12 and iron.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH DIET IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Dietary requirements are very individual and can depend on many factors—including age, current medical conditions, medications, gut function, and more. I will help tailor a diet plan that meets your individual needs and not just a tick list online.

Is Fat Ever a Good Thing?

The simple answer is hell yes! Good fat is absolutely vital for your body to function properly. It contributes to creating vital hormones such as sex hormones which make you curl your toes and say Oooh!

Good fat comes from food sources such as avocadoes, nuts, nut butter, seeds, and oily fish such as salmon.

Is it OK to take protein powders? Are they all the same?

My preference is to always consume a balanced diet and get macro (and micro) nutrients such as protein from whole food sources like chicken, fish, eggs, beans and legumes. That said, a good quality protein powder can be hugely beneficial especially at times of intense training, where protein requirements may increase.

Protein powders can be animal or plant based and are concentrated forms of powdered protein. Animal based protein powders tend to be made of two milk proteins; whey and casein. Plant based protein powders may be made from pea, hemp, soy and algae.

Not all protein powders are the same so it is very important to read the ingredients list for sweeteners, additives and possible contaminants. In addition it is always better to opt for a protein powder that has been tested by a third-party.

Excessive amounts of protein can lead to many health problems such as weight gain, digestive issues, liver and kidney dysfunction to name a few. So, the key is to continue with a balanced diet and supplement with a good quality protein powder if requirement cannot be met through real food.
